Server migration on 11/2/2014

As much as we have enjoyed our time hosting with Rackspace, the time has come to move to newer hardware and software. Linode fits the bill to a T. Their use of solid state hard drives combined with the latest operating, web server, and database systems will yield better performance, stability, and scalability.

The migration window is set to start at 9PM PDT on 11/2/14 and last three hours. During this time your system may be inaccessible for up to 15 minutes, and in most cases less. However syllabus and course file uploads will be unavailable for up to two hours.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We’ll update this post with the progress and when the conversion is in place.

Update November 2, 10:44pm PDT: We have completed the migration to Linode. All systems should be fully operational though some may still be unable to upload files as DNS propagates over the next hour. If you observe anything out of the ordinary, please contact our support staff and we’ll be glad to help you smooth things out.

Update November 3, 9:27am PDT: We have learned about and resolved an issue preventing some clients from accessing their systems through LDAP authentication points.

Update November 4, 12:04pm PDT: We are pleased to see how well our new infrastructure continues to perform. In particular page load times for our most demanding query, a keyword search, have dramatically fallen for our largest clients, in some cases to less than 15% of their former timings.
