Sometimes it may be desirable to insert "placeholder" items on templates. This can be helpful if you want to provide some sample text for instructors or make sure permissions are set for an item (e.g. not visible to guests). Simply 1) add the item to the template, 2) fill in content if you'd like it to come pre-populated, and 3) set applicable group permissions.
This is quite natural to think about with a single level template, but may also be applied to linked templates under certain conditions. The most typical case is when you are interested in setting the permission of an item category but do not want to necessarily specify content for the linked template directly. This can happen when say you want instructors to fill out their own Objective statements and make sure guests cannot see them. Here you would add Objectives to the higher level template (e.g. institution-level) and set the group permission before generating the linked (course-level) template. The Objectives will not be editable per the course template since they are linked back to the institutional one. However, when that course level template is reproduced for a given course section, the Objective category will already be there for instructors to edit while being hidden from guests.
