Process a Feed Manually

Info
This article will be most useful for System Admins.

Overview

Data feeds can be used to provision a tremendous amount of data in your Concourse system. Concourse offers a wide variety of feeds to support your institution’s goals, such as creating and updating users, courses, registrations, domains, and course tags or identifying users, courses, and registrations to be removed from your system. You can even use data feeds to populate, modify, lock/unlock, copy, and delete syllabus item content.

All data feeds can be processed manually or via automation. Feeds that are processed frequently or on a regular schedule can be automated to reduce human effort. On the other hand, some feeds are processed very rarely and do not require automation; for these feeds, manual processing is a better choice. Continue reading to learn how to process a data feed manually.

Before You Begin

Only users with administer system permission can process feeds manually. If you need to process a feed manually but do not have administer system permission, another user who has administer system permission can update your Concourse account.

Feeds that are processed manually may be constructed manually or via automation. For either approach, keep in mind that all feeds are required to have a header row; header rows and other information about constructing feeds can be found in the following help articles:
  1. Construct and Process System Data Feeds
  2. Construct and Process Item Feeds
  3. Construct and Process Domain Feeds
  4. Construct and Process Copy Feeds
  5. Construct and Process Data Removal Feeds
  6. Construct and Process Delete Locked Item Feeds
If you create a data feed manually, note that all Concourse feeds must be constructed in a program that supports plain text files (.txt extension). You can use Notepad++, TextEdit, or Brackets.io to create the file. The feed file must be encoded as UTF-8 to avoid processing errors.

Processing a Feed Manually

To process a feed manually, system administrators can:

  3. Open the Type drop down in the Process a Feed block.

  5. Select File to open your device’s file browser. On your device, select the previously constructed data feed. The selected file name appears in the Process a Feed block.
  6. Select Process.

Best Practices and Recommendations

Before processing any data feeds in your production environment, we recommend that you attempt processing the feed in your Concourse sandbox first to avoid disruptions or data loss in your production system. If you want your sandbox to be refreshed to match the data in your production environment, send a request to support@campusconcourse.com.

For assistance diagnosing errors in feed processing, refer to the Repository of Feed Errors. This article identifies the most common errors that occur when processing feeds and how to remediate them.
